Here are some of my most interesting blog and news reads of the week.

Reading Stuff:

J.K. Rowling has a new book coming out – her first foray into adult fiction, A Casual Vacancy. There was already a lot of hype quite awhile back for the title and cover reveal, and the current preparation for its release is really quite amazing and fascinating. I imagine some might feel it is all over the top, much in the same way they might about screen celebrities, but I have to confess that even if I’m not within the crowds of eager anticipation for this particular novel, I like that an author is garnering this celebrity status.

Remember when I wrote about the reaction to NPR’s 100 Best [disappointing nearly all-white] YA Novels? As they promised, they looked into it and tried to come up with a response. This quote from their post is disappointing, though not necessarily misguided:

“The bad news is that so long as the nation, and especially the universe of college graduates, is overwhelmingly white, then a popularity poll on books is likely to skew in favor of white authors or white protagonists.”

I think it is sad because it assumes that we only read or prefer protagonists that are of our same race, but it might largely be true. Check out the rest of their efforts to address the race issue of their list.

Writing Stuff:

A random note: one of the blogs I follow had a post entitled “How to Be a Writer: 201 Compelling Tips.” 201??? Pass.

I’m finally reading Stephen King’s On Writing and I’m not very far into it, but I did see this line that I like “Good story ideas seem to come quite literally from nowhere” because it’s a common question, you know – “How do you come up with your ideas/stories?” Heck if I ever have an answer (says the woman who has probably only ever been asked this question a total of 2 times), but I have shared before how I am not one of those writers who constantly has ideas buzzing around in her head. Even though I know I can’t possibly be alone with this “problem”, this is one of the few things I have felt, as this blogger writes, “less of a writer.” Check out her post and discover with me, based upon the comments, that though we may not be “less than” in writing than others, we are still a minority.

Feel Good Video of the Week:

My sister’s comment on my FB post of this video describes it best: “At first I thought “5 minute video? I don’t have time for this before work” but then I couldn’t stop watching! That was a dose of joy right there!” Dancing around the world? Fabulous.

  1. As much as I don’t like it, and as much as it doesn’t apply to me or many of my friends, I do think NPR”s explanation is probably correct.

That video brought a much-needed smile to my face. Completely worth 5 minutes of my time.

I am ambivalent about this release and I don’t know why. I think it might be the summary – it’s not grabbing me yet. However, I am often a loyal reader to authors I love. So the question for me is will I simply put my name on the huge library waiting list, or will I go ahead and buy it? Maybe I’ll wait for the first reviews.
